Modena

MODENA

Modena is a charming small town close to Bologna. It is well known especially for two famous men born there: Luciano Pavarotti and Enzo Ferrari. All the main sights are easy to reach by walk. A comfortable way to get familiar with the town is cycling. In Modena there are nearly 80 kilometres of cycling tracks and hiring a bike is handy.

Two very well known products of Emilia Romagna region and Modena are Lambrusco wine and Modena balsamic vinegar. The most delicious Lambrusco wines are frizzante (a bit sparkling) red wines. They are absolutely worth tasting when visting the area. The shops all around the world sell dark, balsamic vinegar from Modena, but to get the real and original balsamico, you need to find Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena, which is produced from Trebbiano and Lambrusco grapes and has been aged at least 12 years. This original and traditional balsamico is allowed to be sold only in the bottles, which are seen in the photos above.

We visited one of the families producing Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena. Before the visit we did not have an idea how special and fascinating product the balsamico is. We also were surprised how heavenly delicious the true balsamico is - a totally different product from the inexpensive supermarket balsamicos. Acetaia di Giorgio is only two kilometres from the centre of Modena and easy to reach by walk or bike. They offer free tours and tasting in the house.
